Enlarged pores are usually cause by aging, sun exposure or excessive sebum production, oil skin and recurrent inflammation. Acne associated enlarged pores are very common. The lost of skin collagen along with destruction of organised fibres and elastin leads to the appearance of the enlarged pores.
Topical creams and medications are useful to prevent and assist in recovery of the enlarged pores. Excel V+ vascular laser system is useful to reduce sebum productions, while the Enlighten III picosecond laser system is efficient to assist in collagen stimulation and filling in the pores.
Acne atrophic type scars are the most common type of scars appearing in various degree of severity. The inflammatory response of the acne causes the destructions of collagen fibres in the dermis, leading to thinning and fibrosis of the area.
There are three types of atrophic scars: Ice-pick scars, Boxcar scars and Rolling scars.
Most atrophic scars respond only to treatment by fractional or ablative laser platforms, TCA cross, microneedling, chemical peels or surgical subcision.
However, the 1064nm Pico Genesis and Pico Genesis FX treatments from Enlighten III can target specific skin cells leading to controlled wound healing and natural collagen production. The approach can assist in reducing scarring and rejuvenation and regeneration of collagen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is acne?
Acne is a dermatological condition that arises when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead cells and bacteria. The usual sequence of events is as follows:
- The skin pores are blocked by abnormal cells or other external factors
- Sebum produced by the hair follicle exceeds the clearance
- Bacteria starts feeding on the sebum
- Infection sets in and causes inflammation and pus formation
Each type of acne lesions requires a different treatment. There are two general groups of acne:
1. Non-inflammatory acne or comedones:
These are usually formed during early stages when excessive sebum accumulates. They are usually not infected and does not cause any pain or swelling.
- Whitehead are tiny bumps that looks like white or flesh coloured lesions. This is formed when the hair follicle pores is blocked by oil or dead skin.
- Blackheads are tiny bumps that looks like dark-coloured centre appearing to be trapped among the pores. This is formed when the pore blockage is exposed and the contents in the pore is dark due to oxidation.
2. Inflammatory Acne:
These are usually formed during the next stage involving bacterial infection and inflammation of the hair follicle.
- Papules: These appeared as small red bumps that is under the surface of skin
- Pustules: These appeared as a pimple with pus at the centre and surrounding red and inflamed skin
- Nodules: These are chronic large, inflamed lumps caused by blocked pores of deeper tissues under the skin.
- Cyst: These are deep seated, large pus filled lumps.
Types of Acne Scarring
Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin. With repetitive inflammation comes destruction of collagen, changes in microvascular and melanocytes and hence various types of post inflammation discolouration and scarring occurs.
There are various types of scarring:
- Discolouration scars: either as Red scars (Post inflammatory erythema) or Brown scars (Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation)
- Atrophic scars: either as ice-pick scars, boxcar scars or rolling scars.
- Hypertrophic scars: which present as a keloid or thicken elevated scar
Acne scarring is more likely to develop if you:
- Have deeper layer inflammatory type acne, such as acne cyst or nodules
- Pick, pop or squeeze the pimple
