What is the Cervical Screening Test?
Regular cervical screening is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of cervical cancer. The Cervical Screening Test is a crucial procedure designed to detect early signs of cervical cancer. This screening test looks for human papillomavirus (HPV) or cell changes associated with an HPV infection.
Who is eligible for a CST?
Under the National Cervical Screening Program, eligible women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 74 are recommended to screen every five years, if the previous test results were normal. There are now two ways to provide a cervical screening sample. Depending on your circumstances, you may be able to collect your own sample using a simple swab or have your doctor collect the sample.
Regular CSTs are essential for women’s health
While HPV vaccinations have been introduced as a preventive measure against certain HPV strains and cervical cancer, it’s important to note that vaccines do not offer protection against all HPV types. Therefore, even if you have received the HPV vaccine, having regular CSTs remains essential for comprehensive cervical health.
The importance of regular screening cannot be overstated, as it serves as a proactive approach to women’s well-being. Routine CSTs, in conjunction with HPV vaccinations, create a robust strategy for cervical cancer prevention. At Skin and Health Medical, we advocate for regular screenings as a fundamental aspect of women’s healthcare, promoting early detection and overall cervical health.
If you are unsure whether you are due for screening, have previously found cervical screening uncomfortable or feel anxious about the test, please speak with your GP. We can talk you through what to expect and help make the process as comfortable as possible.
Prioritising breast health is paramount, and at Skin and Health Medical, we emphasise proactive care through comprehensive breast checks.
Changes in your breasts are common and do not necessarily mean something is wrong. However, it is important to have new or unusual changes assessed. You can make an appointment with one of our GPs if you notice a lump, pain, changes to the nipple or skin, discharge or anything else that feels different from normal.
Your doctor can perform a breast examination and discuss whether further testing or imaging may be appropriate. These checks play a crucial role in identifying potential concerns, providing timely interventions, and promoting breast health awareness. Our compassionate team is committed to ensuring your well-being, offering support, and addressing any questions or concerns you may have about breast health.
Perimenopause and menopause can affect much more than your periods. Changes to sleep, mood, energy, concentration, sexual health and physical wellbeing can all occur during this stage of life.
If symptoms are affecting how you feel or function day to day, our experienced women’s health GPs can help you understand what may be happening and talk through suitable management options.
Every person experiences menopause differently, so care should be based on your individual symptoms, health history and preferences. With professional guidance and care, you can navigate the challenges of menopause with confidence and improve your overall quality of life.
Periods vary considerably from person to person, but significant changes or symptoms that interfere with everyday life are worth discussing with your doctor.
Understanding that every individual undergoes a unique menstrual experience, Skin and Health Medical acknowledges the diverse spectrum of discomfort or challenges that may arise during menstruation. We can help investigate concerns such as:
- Heavy periods
- Painful periods
- Irregular or missed periods
- Bleeding between periods
- Changes to your normal cycle
- Symptoms associated with conditions such as endometriosis or polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), previously known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
Our women’s health doctors understand the significance of addressing menstrual health with sensitivity and expertise. By providing personalised care, we aim to support you in managing and improving your menstrual well-being, ensuring a holistic and tailored approach that addresses your specific needs and promotes overall reproductive health.
Vaginal infections are a common concern, and at Skin & Medical, we understand the significance of addressing these issues with sensitivity and expertise. Recognising that symptoms can vary, including changes in discharge colour, vaginal itching, pain during intercourse, burning sensations, or abnormal bleeding, our healthcare professionals are adept at offering thorough evaluations and tailored treatment plans.
We aim to alleviate discomfort and promote vaginal health. Your GP can assess what is happening and recommend appropriate testing and treatment rather than leaving you to manage persistent symptoms on your own.
Urinary Tract Infections are a common and discomforting concern that requires prompt attention, and at Skin and Health Medical, we prioritise comprehensive care for individuals experiencing UTIs. Recognising the symptoms, which may include pain during urination, frequent urges to urinate, or cloudy urine, our healthcare professionals offer thorough assessments and tailored treatment plans. UTIs can affect individuals of any age or gender, and our team is dedicated to providing prompt and effective interventions to alleviate symptoms and address the root cause of infection. With a commitment to well-being, we encourage individuals experiencing UTIs to seek timely medical assistance, ensuring a swift recovery and promoting urinary health.
Sexual health concerns can sometimes feel difficult or embarrassing to speak up about, but they are a normal part of healthcare.
Our doctors provide private and respectful consultations for concerns including STI testing and treatment, vaginal symptoms, discomfort during sex, and other sexual health questions.
If you have noticed a change or simply want reassurance, you can speak openly with your GP in a confidential setting.
Choosing contraception is personal, and the right option depends on your health, lifestyle and future plans.
Our GPs can explain the available contraceptive options and help you weigh up what may suit you best. This can include oral contraception, longer-term contraception and contraceptive devices such as Implanon and intrauterine devices.
We can also provide pre-conception advice if you are considering starting or growing your family, including general health checks, medication reviews and discussions around fertility.
Pregnancy can bring plenty of questions, particularly during the early weeks.
Our team can provide support before, during and after pregnancy and help you understand what to expect at each stage.
Our pregnancy care may include:
- Pregnancy confirmation and early pregnancy care
- Antenatal shared care
- General health checks during pregnancy
- Referrals for appropriate tests, scans and specialist care
- Post-pregnancy and post-partum care
- Support with breastfeeding or lactation concerns
If something is worrying you during pregnancy, you do not need to wait until your next scheduled check-up to speak with a doctor.
Mental health is an important part of your overall wellbeing.
Women can experience anxiety, depression, stress and emotional changes at any stage of life, including during pregnancy, after having a baby and throughout perimenopause or menopause.
You can start by talking with one of our GPs in a private and supportive environment. We can discuss what you have been experiencing and help determine the next step, which may include ongoing GP support, a Mental Health Treatment Plan or referral to a psychologist or another health professional.
You do not need to wait until things feel overwhelming to ask for support.
Women’s Health Doctor Appointment Fees
