First, pores can get clogged from things like buildup of dead skin cells or other factors. Then, the skin produces too much oil, which can’t clear away fast enough. Next, bacteria like C. acnes start to thrive on this extra oil. Finally, this can lead to inflammation and the formation of pus.
AviClear® harnesses the transformative power of light and heat to focus on targeting the sebaceous glands to reduce sebum production, thereby preventing the growth of C. acnes bacteria and minimizing the formation of acne lesions.
Using a precise 1726nm wavelength, AviClear® targets and effectively denatures the sebaceous glands. By absorbing laser energy, these glands shrink under the heat generated, thereby reducing sebum (oil) production. This dual action not only helps clear existing acne lesions but also works to prevent future breakouts, promoting clearer and healthier skin over time.

Before starting your laser treatment, it’s important to have a chat with our doctors or nurse practitioner. Here are some tips to prepare for your session:
- Try to avoid tanning or getting sunburned for at least 6 weeks before your first treatment and throughout the entire treatment process.
- Refrain from skin treatments like waxing or certain topical therapies that could irritate your skin within 2 weeks prior to your appointment.
- Some topical products may need to be stopped a day before your treatment.
- Please come without makeup on the day of your appointment.
- If needed, trim any excess hair on the day of your treatment.
- Certain patients may require cold sore therapy before or on the treatment day, and others may need to temporarily stop medications that increase risk of bleeding.
During the treatment itself:
- Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed to remove makeup, dirt, and oil.
- Protective eyewear will be provided to shield your eyes from the laser light.
- Our provider will use the AviClear handpiece to deliver precise laser energy to targeted areas.
- Your skin will be kept moistened throughout the procedure to enhance comfort.
During each session, which lasts about 30 minutes, most patients report experiencing minimal to moderate discomfort. Typically, we recommend a series of three treatments for optimal results. Depending on your individual response and skin condition, additional treatments may be necessary. Each treatment session is spaced four weeks apart to allow your skin time to heal and maximize the effectiveness of the laser therapy.
After your treatment:
- Apply sunscreen immediately after the session.
- You may experience some redness and swelling, typically lasting a few hours to a few days.
- There’s no required downtime with AviClear®, so you can resume your normal activities right away.
- Remember to use moisturizer and sunscreen daily to protect your skin.
- Avoid skin irritants for the next few days to ensure optimal results.
We’re committed to your skin’s health and beauty every step of the way. If you have any questions or concerns before, during, or after your treatment, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to support you on your journey to healthier skin!

During the process of suppressing the sebaceous glands with AviClear®, it’s important to understand that results take time to fully manifest. Typically, you’ll begin to notice the full effects within three to six months after completing the initial series of treatments.
During this period, you may experience a gradual improvement in your skin condition, with fewer breakouts and a clearer complexion emerging over time. It’s crucial to stay patient and consistent with your treatment plan to achieve the best possible results.
The AviClear® procedure has shown significant benefits as a standalone treatment in clinical trials:
- At 3 months: Most patients see some improvement; about one-third achieve clear or nearly clear skin.
- At 6 months: 93% of patients experience noticeable improvement, comparable to results seen with oral vitamin A treatments.
- At 12 months: Two-thirds of patients achieve clear or nearly clear skin.
- At 2 years: Patients continue to see improvement, with a 97% reduction in nodules.
It’s important to note that individual responses to AviClear® treatments vary. Some patients enjoy long-lasting results lasting for years.

Post Inflammatory Flare Ups ( “Purging”)
It’s important to note that occasional flare-ups of inflammatory acne lesions, known as “purging,” can occur after treatment. This is a normal response as your skin adjusts and clears out impurities. Our team will discuss this possibility during your consultation so you’re well-prepared.
Typically, these purging occurs a few days to a few weeks after treatment. Rarely, these effects can last for several months.
Doctors at Skin & Medical Northbridge may recommend additional treatments such as topical therapies, systemic agents, physical modalities, or lasers to help manage these flare-ups.
Rest assured, we’re here to ensure your comfort and provide support throughout your journey to clearer, healthier skin. If you have any questions or concerns after your treatment, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Your satisfaction and well-being are our priorities.
While AviClear® focuses on putting acne in remission to prevent flare-ups, it does not treat scars directly. Achieving remission is crucial as it reduces the risk of developing red scars, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and atrophic scarring. During this phase, scars can heal more effectively and stimulate collagen regeneration.
At Skin & Medical Northbridge, our doctors have special interest in effective treatment plans for managing acne scars. This may involve utilizing other advanced laser systems such as Excel V+ and Enlighten III to address specific scar types. Reach out to us to explore how we can help you achieve smoother, clearer skin with tailored solutions.
Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin. With repetitive inflammation comes destruction of collagen, changes in microvascular and melanocytes and hence various types of post inflammation discolouration and scarring occurs.
There are various types of scarring:
- Discolouration scars: either as Red scars (Post inflammatory erythema) or Brown scars (Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation)
- Atrophic scars: either as ice-pick scars, boxcar scars or rolling scars.
- Hypertrophic scars: which present as a keloid or thicken elevated scar
Acne scarring is more likely to develop if you:
- Have deeper layer inflammatory type acne, such as acne cyst or nodules
- Pick, pop or squeeze the pimple
