AviClear® FAQ

Acne happens when hair follicles get blocked by a mix of oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria—it’s a common skin issue that many of us face. Here’s how it typically unfolds:

First, pores can get clogged from things like buildup of dead skin cells or other factors. Then, the skin produces too much oil, which can’t clear away fast enough. Next, bacteria like C. acnes start to thrive on this extra oil. Finally, this can lead to inflammation and the formation of pus.

AviClear® harnesses the transformative power of light and heat to focus on targeting the sebaceous glands to reduce sebum production, thereby preventing the growth of C. acnes bacteria and minimizing the formation of acne lesions.

Using a precise 1726nm wavelength, AviClear® targets and effectively denatures the sebaceous glands. By absorbing laser energy, these glands shrink under the heat generated, thereby reducing sebum (oil) production. This dual action not only helps clear existing acne lesions but also works to prevent future breakouts, promoting clearer and healthier skin over time.

AviClear® treatment solutions is indicated for treatment of inflammatory acne and is suitable for:
1) Adolescents and Adults
2) Mild, Moderate, or Severe Acne
3) All Fitzpatrick Skin types

and is especially recommended for anyone who :
1) prefers to treat acne without being on long-term medications
2) has failed in achieving response while on medications
3) are breastfeeding or intending to get pregnant
4) are transitioning off their acne medications

AviClear® treatment is not suitable for:
1) pregnant women
2) patients undergoing treatment for Skin Cancer.
3) patients who are currently taking oral Isotretinoin (commonly known as Accutane) should be aware that Isotretinoin suppresses excessive sebaceous (oil) secretion, which is the specific target area addressed by the AviClear® laser treatment. Therefore, concurrent use of Isotretinoin alongside AviClear® laser treatments is generally not recommended. This is because Isotretinoin’s mechanism of action may interfere with the intended effects of the AviClear® treatment.

While AviClear® focuses on putting acne in remission to prevent flare-ups, it does not treat scars directly. Achieving remission is crucial as it reduces the risk of developing red scars, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and atrophic scarring. During this phase, scars can heal more effectively and stimulate collagen regeneration.

At Skin & Medical Northbridge, our doctors have special interest in effective treatment plans for managing acne scars. This may involve utilizing other advanced laser systems such as Excel V+ and Enlighten III to address specific scar types. Reach out to us to explore how we can help you achieve smoother, clearer skin with tailored solutions.

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin. With repetitive inflammation comes destruction of collagen, changes in microvascular and melanocytes and hence various types of post inflammation discolouration and scarring occurs.

There are various types of scarring:

  1. Discolouration scars: either as Red scars (Post inflammatory erythema) or Brown scars (Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation)
  2. Atrophic scars: either as ice-pick scars, boxcar scars or rolling scars.
  3. Hypertrophic scars: which present as a keloid or thicken elevated scar

Acne scarring is more likely to develop if you:

  • Have deeper layer inflammatory type acne, such as acne cyst or nodules
  • Pick, pop or squeeze the pimple

Acne is a dermatological condition that arises when hair follicles become clogged with oil, dead cells and bacteria. The usual sequence of events is as follows:

  • The skin pores are blocked by abnormal cells or other external factors
  • Sebum produced by the hair follicle exceeds the clearance
  • Bacteria starts feeding on the sebum
  • Infection sets in and causes inflammation and pus formation

Each type of acne lesions requires a different treatment. There are two general groups of acne:

1. Non-inflammatory acne or comedones:
These are usually formed during early stages when excessive sebum accumulates. They are usually not infected and does not cause any pain or swelling.

  • Whitehead are tiny bumps that looks like white or flesh coloured lesions. This is formed when the hair follicle pores is blocked by oil or dead skin.
  • Blackheads are tiny bumps that looks like dark-coloured centre appearing to be trapped among the pores. This is formed when the pore blockage is exposed and the contents in the pore is dark due to oxidation.

2. Inflammatory Acne:
These are usually formed during the next stage involving bacterial infection and inflammation of the hair follicle.

  • Papules: These appeared as small red bumps that is under the surface of skin
  • Pustules: These appeared as a pimple with pus at the centre and surrounding red and inflamed skin
  • Nodules: These are chronic large, inflamed lumps caused by blocked pores of deeper tissues under the skin.
  • Cyst: These are deep seated, large pus filled lumps.

Acne red scars, also known as post inflammatory erythema (PIE), are flat red marks as a result of acne. The redness is due increase in blood vessels and thinning of the epidermis following the acne inflammation.

PIE can be self limiting, usually 3 to 6months from the onset. Topical cream and therapy can assist in the healing and reductions of the redness.

Excel v+ stands out as an effective vascular laser system to manage PIE. It is crucial to stabilize the active acne prior to treatment of PIE. Typically, four to six treatments are required for optimal results. Make an appointment now the doctors at Skin & Medical Northbridge to design an individualised vascular laser therapy plan.

Acne brown scars, also known as post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), are darken pigmentation marks as a result of inflammation or injury to the skin. The colour can range from light brown to black. PIH can occur in anyone but is more common in Fitzpatrick skin type III to VI. The pigmentation is due to increased deposition of melanin within the skin cells, which is caused by inflammation stimulating the melanocytes.

PIH can be self limiting, but often become darker if exposed to sun light and can last for many years. Topical cream and therapy can assist in the healing and reduction of the pigmentation.

Enlighten III leads the way in managing pigmentation conditions, including PIH. Typically, four to six treatments are required for optimal results. Regardless of type and severity of pigmentation, picosecond laser system has the ability to lighten pigmentation and regain radiant and even tone skin. Make an appointment now the doctors at Skin & Medical Northbridge to design an individualised picosecond laser therapy plan

Laser facial rejuvenation is important part of acne management plan, during acne flare-ups, post acne flare-ups, prevention of flare-ups and especially during the treatment of various discolouration and atrophic scars.

The Excel V + Laser Genesis rejuvenation therapy can help manage oily skin by regulating oil production and promoting skin balance. It also assist in restoring moisture to the skin. This is perfect for those with oily or dull complexions, as it can help reduce the appearance of large pores and oily skin. Your skin will be smoother, softer, and will have a more youthful glow to it.

The Enlighten III Pico Genesis rejuvenation therapy can help to promote collagen, elastin, and new skin cell production, The end result is diminishing the appearance of existing enlarged pores, uneven surface and scarring, while improving skin tightening, firmness and resilience,

Acne atrophic type scars are the most common type of scars appearing in various degree of severity. The inflammatory response of the acne causes the destructions of collagen fibres in the dermis, leading to thinning and fibrosis of the area.

There are three types of atrophic scars: Ice-pick scars, Boxcar scars and Rolling scars.

Most atrophic scars respond only to treatment by fractional or ablative laser platforms, TCA cross, microneedling, chemical peels or surgical subcision.

However, the 1064nm Pico Genesis and Pico Genesis FX treatments from Enlighten III can target specific skin cells leading to controlled wound healing and natural collagen production. The approach can assist in reducing scarring and rejuvenation and regeneration of collagen.
